Industries make most of the products we use in our lives. These goods that we get from industries include drugs, foods, cosmetics, electrical appliances, hardware among others. These products are made from different raw materials. Unknown to many are the effects of the products when they are exposed to the public or the environment. This reason has made it necessary for al consumer products to be tested before use.
Product testing is also called comparative testing or consumer testing. It is the series of tests performed on products while still in the factory before they can make their way into the market. Product testing is however done on a representative sample and not on the entire stash of goods produced. Performance of the samples in the tests is taken as the overall results of the tests of the whole product batch. Any product you see in the market has already undergone a number of tests before it was allowed into the market. We now look at some tests done on consumer products prior to their consumption.
Firstly, there are a series of tests done specifically for products like food, drugs and cosmetics. Animal testing is the basic test done on these products before they can be tested on any human subjects. The basic requirement for testing a product on an animal is that the animals being used for testing the product have to be protected. When doing the tests on an animal, the manufacturer hopes that the effects of the drug, food or cosmetic will yield the same results when tested on humans. Two tests, dermal and oral, are given to the animal. To test for the products effects when ingested, oral tests are performed on the animals. The other tests are dermal tests which are performed on animals to test the effect of the products on the skin of the users. Once a product has passed the animal test, it can then be tested on human subjects.
For products that we do not consume, the tests are not done on animals. Such products will include vehicles, mobile phones, televisions, and utensil among many more. Based on the uses of these products, the tests done on them vary from item to item. The tests are conducted in simulated environments. Stresses and all other dynamics that are bound to face the product in real life scenarios are created artificially and imposed on the product. These stresses and dynamics for testing these products include light, wind, noises, vibrations and many others.
Before any product is released to the market for public use, it has to be subjected to environmental tests. How harmful the product of its remains are to the environment has to be established through tests before the release of the product. Decomposition of the products as well as the release of any harmful gases are the things environmental tests focus on. No product is allowed into the market if it fails the environmental test.
